Information About Stomach Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

Stomach cancer, often also referred to as gastric cancer, can start in any part of the stomach and then spread to other parts of the body such as the esophagus, liver, lungs and lymph nodes before it is discovered. This can often be attributed to the fact that it has no noticeable early symptoms or perhaps it can be better said that the early symptoms are easily and often attributed to other causes, such as heartburn, indigestion or loss of appetite. It has been noted that people in the early stages of this cancer often find that they no longer like to eat meat.

The symptoms that show up later tend to be much more attention getting, being such things as abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, often accompanied by vomiting up blood, diarrhea or constipation, often with blood in the stools and difficulty in swallowing.

While these things don't always mean this cancer, many times they do and it is important to be checked by a doctor for the possibility as soon as possible.

The leading cause of stomach cancer is helicobacter pylori, which is simply a fancy term for a bacteria which invades the stomach and quietly takes over. Doctors and other medical professionals are investigating the very real possibility that there is a genetic connection involved in the attacks of this bacteria.

Diet may also have a great influence on whether or not an individual gets stomach cancer. Studies seem to indicate that those persons whose diets are high in smoked foods, salted fish and meat, and pickled vegetables are more apt to be stricken with this cancer than those persons whose diets consist highly of fresh fruits and vegetables which are high in such vitamins as A and C and who seem less apt to be stricken with this cancer.

Studies have also shown that smoking tobacco increases the very real possibility of contracting stomach cancer as does the consumption of alcohol.

Stomach cancer progresses in different stages and therefore can often be treated in different ways. Stage 0, which is when this cancer is in a very early development, can be easily treated by what is called endoscopic mucosal resectin, requiring no chemotherapy or radiation. Stages 1, 1A and 1B are further progressed and require chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Stage 2 is treated similarly to stage 1, only with an additional form of chemotherapy. Stage 3 is treated in the same way as stage 2 and sometimes can be beaten. Stage 4 is when the cancer has spread through the body and in this case treatments are given, perhaps to prolong life or to improve what one might term the quality of the life.

Periodic routine checkups may reveal the presence of stomach cancer in its early stages. It is much recommended that these checkups be made before this so called silent killer begins to speak loudly.

Information About Liver Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

Liver cancer is differentiated from other cancers which invade the liver from other parts of the body in that it starts in the liver itself. It consists of malignant growths that grow in or on the liver itself.

The first form of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma. This is usually found in children and young people. The prognosis is that the victim usually lives from three to six months after the cancer is discovered.

Symptoms of this kind of cancer include abdominal masses, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia, that is a decrease in the amount of red blood cells that would usually be found in the body, back pain, jaundice, unexplainable weight loss and fever.

Treatments for this can be a partial hepatectomy, that is a partial removal of the liver, a liver transplant, cyroablation, that is using extreme cold to remove the tissue, chemotherapy, and some sort of radiotherapy.

Hepatoblastoma is another form of this cancer which usually attacks children.

Treatments for this form of cancer include liver transplant, partial removal of the liver, various forms of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Cholangiocarcinoma is the form of cancer that is accountable for one or two percent out of every ten liver cancers. It usually forms in the bile ducts, which are the small tubes responsible for carrying bile to the intestines.

Symptoms of this kind of cancer are jaundice, abdominable pain, unexplainable weight loss and an enlargement of the liver.

Treatments for this form of cancer include such methods as photodynamic therapy, that is using a combination of a photosensitizer, light and tissue oxygen, various forms of radiation therapy and liver transplant.

Angiosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma are two forms of liver cancer which start in the blood vessels of the liver. By the time that they are discovered, they are usually too far advanced to be combated and the victim usually dies within a year or so after the discovery of the malignancy.

In the case of either of these kind of cancers, rather than combating the cancers, medications are given to help the victim to enjoy the quality of the life that is left to them, combating the sickness that they feel and in some cases being able to prolong the length of the time they have left to live.

Liver cancer, in all of its various forms, is a nasty thing; don't let it dirty you up. See to it that you and your family follow your doctor's recommended schedule for regular checkups. Don't let liver cancer take away your life.

Information About Kidney Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

While there are many types of cancer that end up involving the kidneys, the term kidney cancer has been determined to refer to those cancers that actually originate in the kidneys themselves. The two most common forms of cancer that fit this description are renal cell carcinoma and urothelial cell carcinoma.

Renal cell carcinoma starts in the tubes of the kidneys that filter the blood and get rid of the waste products. It is the most common kidney cancer in adults, accounting for eighty percent of the adult kidney cancers found in adults and is also the most lethal of the kidney cancers.

Symptoms of renal cell carcinoma include blood in the urine, pain in the side or sides of the body just below the rib cage to just below the pelvis, a palpable mass in the abdomen, and hydronephrosis, which is an enlargement and misshaping of the renal pelvis and calyces, due to the blockage of the free flow of urine from the kidney.

Treatment of renal cell carcinoma focuses on the removal of the obstruction and draining of the urine from the kidney or kidneys involved.

The second of the two most common form of kidney cancer is urothelieal cell carcinoma. It forms itself in the tissue that lines the hollow spaces which are part of the two kidneys. This form of kidney cancer has proven itself to be very difficult to treat effectively. One common form of treatment is surgery, removing the tumor, however it is very often replaced by another tumor.

Another form of treatment used to combat renal cell carcinoma is chemotherapy, that is the use of chemicals to combat the cancer.

Medical studies seem to point to such things as the use of phenacetin as a painkiller, smoking, being exposed to secondhand smoke and the excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages as causes for the formation of renal cell carcinoma.

Ironically enough, recent medical studies seem to indicate that the use of cyclophosphamide to combat other forms of cancer seems to contribute to causing urotheliel cell carcinoma in the kidneys. This makes one wonder if there are times when one might aggressively combat one form of cancer, only to risk giving oneself another form of cancer by so doing.

The best way to fight kidney cancer, or any form of cancer for that matter, is to do all that one can to live in such a way as to prevent its formation. This means eating healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits and getting proper exercise.

Also, follow a routine of following your doctor's recommendations for periodic checkups. Catching kidney cancer in its very early stages can make all the difference in being able to combat it and in being the victor over it, rather than being its victim.

Information About Chemotherapy

By Brijesh Ghelani

Chemotherapy, the very words themselves strike terror into the heart of most every cancer victim. Not that the treatments themselves aren't affective, often they work very successfully, however with many people the first thing they think of is how sick they have heard people get with this form of treatment. I've heard it said that some people claim that they are sick for several days, better for one or two and then go back for more treatments only to repeat the cycle over again.

Chemotherapy itself is the treatment of combating a disease, in this case cancer, through the use of a select group of chemicals which combat and kill fast dividing blood cells. Since fast division is something which is often attributed to various forms of cancer, chemotherapy is often the treatment of choice.

Chemotherapy is also used to combat other diseases, including multiple sclerosis, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, lupis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Another nightmare aspect that the words chemotherapy bring to mind is that of hair loss. I'm sure we've all heard the stories about someone running their fingers through their hair to smooth it back only to have it start falling out in clumps, or perhaps getting up in the morning to find that their hair stays behind on their pillow.

The thing that isn't emphasized as much as these nightmare aspects is that chemotherapy quite often helps in three different ways for which it may be used. The first is curative. Chemotherapy often does prove successful in eliminating the body of cancer, thereby curing the person, secondly, in prolonging the person's life by slowing down the cancer from its invasion of the person's body and thirdly, in a palative way, by helping to improve the so called quality of the person's life, thereby emphasizing quality rather than quantity.

Chemotherapy is usually delivered through the means of intravenous injection. This method has improved through the years until today it often is delivered through isolated infusion, which simply means that it is given in a concentrated dose that is aimed right at the afflicted area, rather than also attacking the entire system, which means it is less apt to destroy good cells that are fast acting as right along with the cancerous cells which it is intended to destroy.

The so-called nightmare aspects of chemotherapy can be combated. The studies conducted by many medical professionals have led them to recommend that their patients eat frequent small meals, rather than the usual three meals a day. Many also recommend the drinking of clear liquids or of ginger tea. The important thing to remember is that chemotherapy helps in most cases and that the adverse effects usually stop shortly when the treatments are ended.

As for the hair loss, the hair does grow back. This has never proven to be a permanent thing. A strange aspect of this growing back is that it sometimes grows back curly, even though it was straight to begin with. This result is often rather jokingly referred to as a 'chemo perm'.

Chemotherapy is a good thing. It is intended to and often does help with the purpose for which it is used. This is one nightmare that can be the answer to a person's best dreams.

Information About Cancer Surgery

By Brijesh Ghelani

The number one aspect of cancer treatment, is cancer surgery. Surgery may be used for one or more reasons. It can be used to remove the cancerous area, the tumor or growth, to repair damage that was done by a tumor or growth, to remove a piece of the tumor in order to examine it to see if it is indeed cancerous or perhaps to prevent a person from contracting cancer. If there is a genetic history for example of some sort of cancer, for instance colon cancer, than removing that part of the body which might well be susceptible to cancer can prevent it's possibility, not from cancer itself but from that particular form of cancer.

Cancer surgery has several forms, done for various reasons. One form is called staging. This is done when the doctor wants to find out what stage the cancer has reached in its formation. For example, what size is the tumor and has it spread and involved other parts of the body.

Another form of cancer surgery is called primary surgery. This is when the cancerous area is highly located and doesn't appear to have spread. The tumor is then often removed and other forms of treatment used in conjunction with the surgery, such as radiation or chemotherapy, to kill any cancer cells that may remain.

Still a third form of this surgery is called debulking. In this form of cancer surgery, when it is impossible to remove the entire cancerous area, a portion of it is removed, with the goal of possibly making the radiation or chemotherapy used more effective.

Cancer surgery is also used, not to remove the cancer but rather to eliminate the symptoms or the side effects of the cancer.
Examples of this would be to relieve such a thing as pain being caused by a tumor pressing on a nerve or by a tumor causing some sort of an obstruction in the body.

In many cases of cancer surgery, the surgeon will remove not only the cancerous tissues involved but also some of the healthy tissues surrounding them, as a safety measure in striving to remove all of the cancerous tissues. The surgeon will also many times remove some of the lymph nodes, in order to test them to see if the cancer has spread into their area.

In the cases of different kinds of cancer, that is located and attacking different parts of the body, the cancer surgeries will take different forms. For breast cancer for example, cancer surgery may mean the removal of one or both breasts, that is the performance of a mastectomy, or it may mean the removal of that part of the breast where the cancer is located, along with some of the surrounding healthy tissues. This is called a lumpectomy.

In the case of lung cancer, cancer surgery may mean the removal of an entire lung, which is called a pneumonectomy or it may mean the removal of part of one lung, which is called a lobectomy.

Don't avoid being checked if you feel something is wrong. If you do have cancer and surgery is called for, the sooner that you get it done, the better. Treat yourself as you would treat a friend and give yourself good advice and follow it.

Information of Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

People often dread receiving news of being diagnosed with cancer and because millions die each year it helps to become familiar with what cancer is so that you can take necessary steps to cancer prevention. There are various types of cancer and most of them have similar beginnings with different approaches for prevention and treatment once diagnosed. So exactly what is cancer?

Cancer is a group of cells in the body that has grown out of control and even though there are many types of cancer many of them are developed from abnormal cell growth. Normal cells in the body grow and mutate on their own and when cells die they are replaced or repaired. The younger you are the faster your cells grow, divide, and die and as an adult the process slows down and more cells are replaced and repaired.

Cancer involves abnormal cell growth meaning cells that should have died continue to mutate and divide. When they continue to do this they form a tumor or mass of cells in most cases and invade or grow onto other body tissues. The process describes what happens when DNA cells are damaged and because the cell didn't die off like it's supposed to there are additional cells present that the body doesn't need. Since it affects body cells and DNA this is how many types of cancer become genetic.

Most cancers that develop become a mass of cells which is referred to as a lump like breast cancer or a tumor like brain cancer but in a cancer such as leukemia the cells involve the blood and effect organs that create blood for the body. Since they affect blood cells the cancer is circulated in the tissues. When the cancer gets into the bloodstream and begins to grow and form new cells this is called metastasis which spreads the cancer to other areas of the body.

There is another kind of tumor that is not cancerous called a benign tumor and though they are not cancerous they can cause problems by growing large enough to press against healthy tissues yet they don't invade since they don't metastasize. As a result they are not life threatening but in many cases they need to be removed. Because there are so many types of cancer and the process of how cancer develops is so similar what makes one type of cancer differ from another?

Cancers differ by where they first started in their development. It is named due to where it started no matter where it spreads to. Often time's people can have cancer spread to the liver or lungs but in fact it is diagnosed as breast cancer or brain cancer because that is the area of the body where the cancer cells developed. Since cancer often develops in different areas of the body and effect how the body functions there are different types of treatments for that specific cancer. Many cancers are preventable by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Information About Throat Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

Throat cancer is most easily described as any cancer which arises in the area of the throat, for instance in the vocal cords or in the larynx, that part of the body we often refer to as the voice box.

Smoking or chewing tobacco has been found to be one of the major causes of throat cancer. So easily preventable, yet so often ignored. Second hand smoke also has been found to be a cause of this cancer, that is being around someone who smokes or in an area where smoking has taken place.

Throat cancer occurs much more often in men than in women. Age seems to be a factor also, since most people who are diagnosed with this cancer are in their sixties or older. Medical professionals feel that their studies seem to indicate that the use of alcohol also can lead to this cancer.

Symptoms of throat cancer are such things as unusual breathing sounds, a persistent cough, often accompanied by coughing up blood, difficulty in swallowing, a long lasting hoarseness, pain in the area of the neck, persistent sore throats, swelling in the neck, a lump on the neck or a sudden, unexplainable loss of weight.

It is important not to ignore these warning signs. Throat cancer can be cured in ninety percent of its victims if it is caught in its early stages. It usually requires some form of surgery from a very simple form if caught it its early stages to more drastic measures later on. If the cancer has entered into the last stages, the surgery may well involve the removal of the larynx or some part of the throat which will result in the patient being unable to eat food normally.

Throat cancer is one that can quite often be prevented. Not smoking or using tobacco and minimizing ones intake of alcohol are major contributors to cutting down ones likelihood of getting this cancer. Although not all this cancers can be attributed to these things, the vast majority can be.

Information About Bladder Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

Although there is more than one form of bladder cancer, that which we normally think of when we hear or read this term is transitional cell carcinomas. These are cancers that form in the cells that comprise the inner lining of the bladder. The other forms of cancer which also fall under this heading are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. These last two, unlike the first, are usually the result of some sort of chronic irritation and inflammation.

Signs of possible bladder cancer are such things as blood in the urine, pain when urinating and feeling the need to urinate but experiencing no results when attempting to do so. While these signs are not always a
symptom of bladder cancer, they definitely should be checked out by a medical professional.

While we often tend to think of smoking as being connected with lung cancer, medical professionals feel that their studies show a definite connection between smoking and bladder cancer. They have reported that the vast majority of cases of bladder cancer can be attributed to smoking tobacco. They also have reported that there is also a definite connection between this cancer and the use of artificial sweeteners.

Studies of bladder cancer have shown that those who work in fields which expose them to those elements found in cigarette smoke also are at a greater risk for developing this cancer even though they themselves may not be smokers. Studies show that these fields include such occupations as bus drivers, rubber workers, motor mechanics, leather workers, blacksmiths, machine setters, mechanics and hair dressers. While not all of these are because of cigarette smoke, some of the same elements in cigarette smoke are also connected with these occupations.

Many medical professionals feel that their studies have shown that a diet which includes fruits, carrots, horse radish, cauliflower, and other vegetables which come under the heading of cruciferous vegetables definitely tend to lower the risk factor of developing some form of this cancer.

Bladder cancer can be treated in different ways, depending upon its stage of development. In the very early stages, it can often be dealt with by a very superficial treatment known as BCG Immunotherapy. Later stages usually call for more aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy and/or radiation. Some treatments have had to go as far as to involve the use of a colostomy.

There have been close to eighty thousand new cases of bladder cancer diagnosed this year alone and the year is not yet over. Of these cases, close to fifteen thousand have resulted in deaths. We have the tools in the form of the knowledge which our medical professionals have given us to lower these numbers. Let's use them to help ourselves and others.

Bladder Cancer - Some Information

By Michael C Logan

If you have been diagnosed with bladder cancer then you need to make sure that you get a treatment in the earliest stage. This is potentially life threatening so it is recommended that you get a treatment done as soon as possible. There are several treatments available now and they differ according to the stage of the cancer. In the initial stage the treatment is less dramatic and cost efficient. This way you can control the tumor or even terminate it. The treatments include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, etc. in the initially stage only one treatment is required but in the advanced stage the doctor may combine two or more treatments. This can be a bit expensive that is why it is essential to find the right doctor. You need to make sure that you get it diagnosed and treated in the initial stage in order to get better results.

Treatment can be performed in any stage. In the initial stage the tumor can be removed from the urinary tract itself. The symptoms are easy to analyze and these symptoms include pain while urination, blood in the urine, frequent urination, etc. once you see these signs and symptoms you should immediately rush to a physician and get a treatment done. The most common cause of this is frequent smoking. Thought the causes haven't been determined as yet you need to make sure that you stop smoking. You will get all the required information on this topic on the internet. Here you will also be able to find the best surgeons. You need to be able analyze the cause and then diagnose the problem. Once you have seen any of the above mentioned symptoms then it is recommended that you take up measures for treatment immediately.

Cancer is something that is very scary, so if someone sees a tumor anywhere in the body, he or she will immediately panic. You need to keep your calm and make sure that you take up measure to terminate the problem. You cannot and should not take chances with your life. Cancer can cause some physical and mental trauma. Usually people who are aging get affected by this but now it has no certain age limit. If you have detected that you have bladder cancer then you should certainly not stop living but find ways eliminate the problem permanently.

Information of Bone Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

Bone cancer is a cancerous tumor which can begin in any part of any bone in the body. It is important to note that not all tumors which are found in the bone are cancerous but those that are need to be dealt with quickly and aggressively before it metastasizes, that is spreads, to other parts of the body.

Although they all fall under the heading of bone cancer, there are different types of cancers which start in the bone. The first is the osteosarcoma form of cancer which starts in the osteoid tissue and usually is found in the knee and upper part of the arm. This form of bone cancer seems to strike most predominantly at children and teens. The second is the chondrosarcoma which is found in the hips, legs, pelvis and shoulders. This form of cancer tends to attack people forty and over. Medical professionals feel that their studies indicate that there are sometimes hereditary factors connected with these first two forms of this cancer. The third is the ewing sarcoma which is usually found in the backbone, pelvis, legs and arms.

Medical professionals believe that their studies seem to indicate this cancer seems to show up most frequently in those who have had some sort of radiation or chemotherapy treatment. It also seems to show up in those people who have had some sort of metal implant inserted into their body, such as a plate used to hold together a broken bone.

Often, but not always, symptoms of bone cancer show up as frequent pain and swelling. With children, people sometimes tend to attribute these to what are often referred to as growing pains and with adults, as simply part of the aging process. It is important that these symptoms not be ignored. While it may be true that they are not an indication of something serious, it may be that they are also and it is important that they be checked professionally.

Should a diagnosis of bone cancer be made, it is important that treatment be started immediately. The most common treatment is surgery. This does not always mean amputation, as many people are apt to think. The majority of bone cancers do not lead to amputation if caught early enough and dealt with. Other forms of treatment are chemotherapy, radiation and cryosurgery. This last, which is less well known than the other forms of treatment, involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the cancerous cells.

A person who has had bone cancer, even after it has been removed, needs to be checked often because this often comes back or leads to some other form of cancer. Early diagnosis is a good combatant and a cure of bone cancer doesn't mean that a person is free forever from this enemy. The best defensive is a good offensive.

Information About Cancer Symptoms

By Brijesh Ghelani

The term "cancer" often sends a chill running as it is known to be one of the deadliest diseases the world has seen till today. The term is used as a broad classification to denote diseases that are caused by random and uncontrollable cell growth in the human body. Though the disease is classified into five major groups, there are more than 100 types of cancer depending on the area or organ where abnormal cells start to develop.

The cure for cancer is not yet completely established though medical advancement has raised the cure ratio to almost about 60-70%. The disease is completely curable when it s detected in the early stages and its growth controlled. Thus this calls in for the need or the awareness for every individual to know about cancer and its symptoms. Though some of the types of cancer do not show any symptoms or signs until they develop into advanced stages, many exhibit common symptoms which can be watched for. This article is all about the symptoms associated with cancer and detailed information about them.

1. Fatigue - The most common symptom that cancer exhibits is persistent fatigue. The patient experiences fatigue in all stages of the disease and is more pronounced in the advanced states. Though many cancers exhibit fatigue at the early state itself clearly, some might not display till the disease grows extensively inside the body. Fatigue can be experienced by both kinds of cancers, be it malignant or malignant and is often associated to becoming anaemic plus loss of immunity in the body. In the types of cancer that affect the bowel organs or the area, fatigue is a very common symptom.

2. Weight Loss - Loss of weight is normally a pleasure for many, but unexpected and excessive weight loss is a point of concern. Loss of excessive weight which may or may not be associated with appetite loss is also known to be one major symptom of cancer. Though weight loss denotes the possibility of many diseases, it is wise to consult a doctor if you think that you have lost massively within a short period.

3. Fever - A fever is a mild indication given by the body that something is wrong internally. Though fever is associated with many diseases, persistent fever or one that occurs frequently needs to be attended. Such kind of fevers normally denotes a stressed immune system and it is advisable to then get screening for cancer done. Normally cancers related to blood like leukemia or lymphoma show symptoms of fever and so also do other cancers which are in quite advanced state.

4. Bowel Changes - Colon cancer normally exhibits symptoms of bowel changes which might be followed with constipation, diarrhea, gas or blood in stools. In case of such situations, it is advisable to consult your physician and get a screening done for cancer. These though are common symptoms of cancer, and sometimes can also be linked to other types of cancer.

5. Cough - Cough is normally a day-to-day affair, though it is a must to seek medical guidance when it stays for a longer time or is persistent and worse. Chronic cough that is related with mucus or blood is normally a symptom of cancer in the lungs. Though chronic cough with mucus and blood can be caused by many conditions, lung cancer is one possible disease they could be associated with.

6. Pain - Pain is a symptom of cancer but when it is in an advanced stage. It is sometimes a symptom in earlier stages of cancer types which spreads and affects the bone. In other cases of cancer, pain is experienced only when the cancer is in an advanced state and has spread to other parts of the body and nerves. Ovarian and colon cancer can be associated with pain in the lower back. Pain in the shoulder is often related to lung cancer while stomach pains are often related to cancer of the stomach, pancreas, etc. Persistent headaches also need to be taken into consideration as it can be a symptom of malignant or benign tumors of the brain.

These are a few very generic symptoms that are related to cancer though these symptoms can also be caused by other health conditions. Also these can be exhibited in many stages of the different cancer types depending on the individual and the level of spread of the disease.

But this is not all; specific cancer types showcase specific symptoms as an indication of the disease. Below is a list of specific symptoms for a few well-known types of cancer.

* Bone cancer is associated with pain and swelling of the affected area along with weakness and fracture in the bones.
* Brain cancer can be accompanied with dizziness, drowsiness and abnormal eye movements and vision changes.
* Breast cancer is associated with lumps in the breasts and discharge from nipples.
* Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells and can show symptoms of weakness, paleness, fever and prolonged bleeding effects.
* Blood in the urine or pain in the back along with high blood pressure is normally a sign of kidney cancer.
* Skin cancer can cause change in existing moles or bumps on the skin along with discoloration and bleeding.
* Oral Cancer is characterized by lumps or ulcers in the mouth, lip, tongue or inside lining of the mouth. It is also normally accompanied by oral pains, loose teeth, foul breadth and bleeding.
* Ovarian Cancer is cancer of the ovaries which possess signs of swelling and discomfort in the abdomen along with bleeding in an abnormal manner in the vagina.
* Abdominal pain and unexpected weight loss is also sometimes seen in case of pancreatic cancer which might also cause yellowing of the skin and enlargement of the spleen ad liver.
* Patients suffering from stomach cancer can experience difficulties in urination and in retaining urine in the bladder.

They might feel the frequent urgency to urinate along with the burning or painful urination. They might also at times experience dull pain in the pelvic area and/or in the back.

Information About Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

Though we have all heard the term "Cancer" through many sources, the exact facts and details of the disease is not very widely known. Cancer is one of the world's deadliest diseases and is a completely curable if detected at an early age. It is therefore a must to possess awareness about it and this article is a consolidation of the facts and details related to this disease.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is not a single disease but a class of diseases which are typically characterized by random and out-of-control growth in the human body cells. These random cell growth leads to invasion of other normal cells around them leading to their destruction. The cancerous cells divide in an uncontrollable fashion and form lumps or tissue masses known as tumors. These tumors affect the body part where they grow and disrupt their normal functioning. The cancerous cells also spread to other parts of the body through blood or lymph and cause further cell destruction.

Oncologists are physicians or researchers who study about the diagnosis, treatment and sure of cancer. The study of cancer is by itself known as oncology.

Types of Cancer

Cancer can typically affect every organ of the body and spread the disease by destroying the neighbouring cells. The various cancers are named typically after the place where they originate in the body. For example, Breast cancer is cancer that originates in the cells of the breast. With about more than 100 types of cancer, this class of diseases is divided into five broad categories.

* Cancer that originates in the skin or in the tissues that cover the internal organs is known as Carcinoma.
* Cancer that starts in the bone, fat muscle, cartilage or blood vessels are known as Sarcoma.
* Cancer in the blood forming tissues like the bone marrow is known as Leukaemia. This type of cancer enters the blood stream and spreads to all the parts of the body.
* Cancer that begins in the immune system of the body is known as Lymphoma and Myeloma.
* Cancer in the cells of the brain and spinal cord are known as Central nervous system cancer.

Symptoms of Cancer

The symptoms of cancer are an important factor in the early detection, though some types of cancer do not exhibit any symptoms at all unless they are in the advanced state. Though each type of cancer exhibits different types of symptoms there are few symptoms that are common to most of the cancers. The patient can exhibit a broad spectrum of symptoms which might not be very specific to the type of cancer like fatigue, unintentional weight loss, fever, bowel changes and chronic cough. Pain is most of the times a symptom of cancer in the advanced form. Pain in the lower back can be symptoms of colon or ovarian cancer while shoulder pain can be a symptom of lung cancer. Though stomach pain can be normally caused by many reasons, stomach cancer is also associated with acute stomach pain.

How harmful is the cancer?

The disease cancer claims the lives of millions of people around the world every year. It is dangerous and life-threatening when it develops as tumors and starts spreading around. The cells may move through the body through lymph systems or the blood and can destroy the other healthy cells in the body. Such a process is known invasion and affects other internal organs other than its place of cancerous origin. Such a tumor that grows, invades and spreads destroying other tissues is known as a metastasized tumor and is a very serious condition which is at times beyond treatment levels.

How is Cancer caused?

The disease cancer is majorly an environmental disease where about 90-95% of the scenarios are caused due to factors like lifestyle and environmental conditions. Only about 5-10% of the cases are caused by genetic disorders. The common factors that lead to environmental causes of cancer are tobacco, obesity, infections, radiation and environmental pollutants. These factors affect the basic underlying genetic cell material leading to the disease.

Treatment course of Cancer

The definitive diagnosis of cancer requires clinical examination of the biopsy specimen. Sometimes initial indication of the malignancy can be through symptomatic or by radiographic imaging abnormalities. Once diagnosed, cancer is normally treated by chemotherapy, surgery or radiation or a mixture of two or more methods. Treatment also depends on the types of cancer and the stage in which the disease has progressed. There are many specific treatment methods that are followed based on the type of cancer and medical advancement has bought in many new types of targeted therapies for the specific kind of cancer. The targeted therapy also works on cancerous cells showcasing abnormal behaviour and reduces the damage caused to normal cells.

How can your effectively prevent cancer?

Cancer prevention is easier than cancer treatment. Though there are many factors that can cause cancer, a few simple changes to your lifestyle can help you prevent them. The below are few methods that you can accommodate or follow to ensure prevention or early detection of cancer.

* Avoid direct or indirect form of smoking
* Look out for skin changes and take care to avoid harmful exposure to the sun
* Maintain a healthy diet of natural fruits and vegetables and limit fat contents
* Keep your alcohol intake within limits
* Remember a healthy exercised body keeps out cancer better
* Learn about any genetic disorders in the family and take necessary screenings
* Beware of harmful substances in your work environment
* Follow safe sexual methods
* Obtain regular cancer screening to detect at early stage

Cancer Research is one of the major scientific efforts that is being undertaken to understand the disease better and find possible therapies. There are many national and international cancer institutes that have been established for this purpose. Since 1971, major advancements have been made in the field of molecular biology and cellular biology leading to many new and advanced treatment modes for cancer.

Cancer is medically defined as a class of diseases where a single or a group of cells undergo uncontrolled growth in an abnormal way invading or destructing the other adjacent cells. These abnormal cells might also sometimes spread to other locations of the body through lymph or blood. Cancer treatment is one major achievement in the field of science that aims at increasing the life span of affected patients, controlling the spread of the disease to other locations of the body and to reduces its symptoms.

Though the existence of Cancer can be traced back to as early as 1600 BC, it has been one of the untreatable diseases until lately. Cancer is one of the many diseases in which huge amount of funds are invested for performing research and experiments for various treatment options. After many years of study and clinical trials, finally there are many methods currently that can help contain the spread of the disease and help affected patients lead a better life.

There are many standard and alternative options of Cancer treatments available due to continuous research and long efforts. The standard methods of treatment include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation methods. Along with the standard methods, there are any alternative methods of treatment which aim at providing a relaxation from the disease symptoms.

Surgery

Most of the types of cancer form a tumor except for few like leukemia. These tumors can be removed by means of surgery to eliminate the cancerous growth from the body. Sometimes in cases of extended damage done by the tumor, the whole organ is removed by means of surgery as a means of preventing further spread or growth. Normally breast cancer and prostrate cancer are treated by this method. This kind of treatment can be used effectively for tumors that do not metastasis or spread across the body. Cancerous growth that has already spread to other parts of the body cannot be contained by means of surgery. Normally a 'Staging' process is carried out prior to surgery to determine the spread levels of the disease to the other parts of the body. This helps decide the level to which surgery might be useful in treating the disease.

Chemotherapy

In some cases, drugs are administered to stop the spread or growth of the cancerous cell. These drugs are given orally or through intravenous methods to kill the abnormal cells and to keep the disease under control. This method of cancer treatment is known as Chemotherapy. The dosage and the frequency of the drug administration or the chemotherapy process is generally decided by the doctor depending on the patient's health condition and staging results. There are no fixed dosage levels for this process of treating cancer. Though effective, this method has an advantage of being a temporary solution. The drug that is administered does fight the disease and tries to recover the cells, but the effects of it are short-lived. The dosage and the frequency increases with time in this type of treatment method. It is also to be considered that Chemotherapy has its own side effects which might vary based on the patients' health.

Radiation Therapy

Like other types of cancer treatments, the Radiation therapy also aims at destructing the diseased cells and in preventing their spread or growth. In this method, high energy x-rays are used instead of drugs to destroy the abnormal cells. These x-rays damage the DNA of the diseased cells thus killing these cells. The method of radiation therapy is in general done at regular intervals so as to provide enough timelines for the other normal cells that also get damaged to recover well. As we saw the radiation therapy method does hurt other normal cells also along with the diseased ones. The damage that is created on the cancerous cells is more than that created in normal cells and hence the normal cells do not suffer destruction like the diseased cells and recover soon.

Hormone Therapy

In some cases, hormones that help in growth of the tumor are counter attacked by giving drugs that act to inhibit such hormonal actions. This method is followed in the hormonal therapy where hormones that help increase the disease effects and symptoms are inhibited by administration of anti-effect drugs. As an example, estrogen is known to promote growth of diseased cells in breast cancer and hence treatment for breast cancer through hormonal methods includes administration of anti-estrogen drugs to the patient.

Modern Methods

There are many new cancer treatment methods that have been recently uncovered by the medical field. Immunotherapy and Transplants are the most popular of all. Immunotherapy is based on the foundation that a strong immune system helps the body fight diseases. In this method, drugs that would help improve the body immunity are prescribed to help the body equip better to fight the disease. Transplants are also common methods of treatment which are normally used in cases of Bone Marrow transplant or stem cell transplant. Other popular but still under research techniques include the Proton therapy, Gene therapy and Biologic therapy.

Alternative Methods

Alternative or complementary methods of treatments are also available for cancer which is mostly targeted as a means of relief from side effects and pain rather than as a cure. Reiki and Acupuncture offer various methods of treatment that helps patients alleviate pain and other discomforts. The Gerson therapy and the Bovine cartilage are also often used as alternative methods of treatment of cancer.

Though there are many modern and standard treatment methods, the spread of the disease is a key factor in the cure possibility rate. Thus it is important that we equip ourselves with basic knowledge about the symptoms and the prevention techniques for cancer to get rid of it completely. Remember if detected early, cancer is not fatal and can be completely cured.

Information About Testicular Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

You must have heard a lot about the testicular cancer treatment though the awareness about this disease is a bit low among the population. This kind of cancer is one of the most common types affecting men in the age group of 20 to 35 years. It is therefore a must to possess the basic awareness about this kind of cancer and its treatment modes to better cure and prevent it.

What are the testicles?

These are the male sex glands which produce testosterone and the sperm. They are 2- egg shaped glands which are located inside the scrotum and are held by the spermatic cord. The scrotum also contains the vas deferens and the vessels and nerves of the testicles. The germ cells inside the testicles are where immature sperms are produced which further travel through a series of tubes to mature as a sperm. This mature sperm is finally stored in the epididymis which is a long tube near the testicle.

What is testicular cancer?

Cancer that is formed in the tissues of one or in both of the testicles is known as testicular cancer. In most of the scenarios, the testicular cancer starts in the germ cells. The testicular cancer tumor can be of 2 types, seminomas and non seminomas depending on the way they grow and their spread mode. Non -seminomas grow and spread much faster compared to the seminomas and hence both types are treated by different methods. When a testicular tumor has both seminoma and non-seminoma cancer cells, they are treated as a non-seminoma case.

How is testicular cancer diagnosed?

Testicular cancer is diagnosed by examination of the testicles and the blood to check for any cancer symptoms. A physical examination is first held to check for any symptoms of lumps or diseased areas which might look a bit abnormal. The testicles are also checked for any pain, swelling or lumps along with a complete study of the patient's medical history. Once the physical examination is done, ultrasound tests are conducted to study a picture of the body tissues. In this procedure ultrasound waves are passed through the body and a sonogram report is drawn as they bounce off the internal tissues and organs.

In case of any lump or tumor identified, the serum tumor marker test is done which is a process in which a blood sample is studied to calculate the amount of substances that is released into the blood by the body cells. If this study shows increased contents of tumor markers which indicate a cancer presence, then a biopsy and a radical inguinal orchiectomy are carried out. The tumor markers for testicular cancer are Alpha - fetoprotein, Beta-human chronic gonadotropin and Lactate dehydrogenase.

Testicular cancer Treatment Options

In almost about 95% of the cases, testicular cancer can be cured with treatment. The chance of getting cured increases the earlier the disease is diagnosed. The traditional treatment methods for testicular cancer include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Surgery - In this method of testicular cancer treatment, the testicles are removed by an incision in the groin by a method known as radical inguinal orchiectomy. Some lymph nodes in the abdomen can also at times be removed as part of the surgery by lymph node dissection methods. The removal of one testicle does not normally interfere with the patient's ability to have sexual intercourse or produce children as one healthy testicle is usually sufficient. Some may also prefer to place an artificial testicle during or after the operation for cosmetic purposes. In cases of removal of lymph nodes, it is possible that it may affect one's fertility though it does not change his sexual ability. Special nerve sparing techniques of surgery can be handled to prevent losing the ability to ejaculate in a normal manner.

Radiation Therapy - This is a mode of treatment where high-energy radiations are used to kill the cancerous cells. This is a local therapy which is normally concentrated on the diseased area reducing the effect on other normal cells. The seminomas kind of testicular cancer responds well to radiation and external machines are employed to treat them, usually after surgery. Men diagnosed with non-seminoma type of cancer do not undergo radiation therapy as such kinds of tumors are less sensitive to radiations. This kind of therapy affects the sperm production in the individuals though they can regain it within a period of 1 or 2 years.

Chemotherapy - This testicular cancer treatment includes administration of drugs to kill the cancerous cells. It is normally given as a adjuvant therapy after surgery or at times of advanced levels as initial treatment to restrict the spread. These drugs travel through the blood stream and kill the diseased cells. Sometimes the normal cells are also affected along with the cancer cells and the destruction depends on the stage of cancer and the dosage of drugs provided. This treatment reduces the sperm count in the individuals though it gets back to normal with time. High dosages of chemotherapy are advisable only when the patients undergo transplantation of the bone marrow as the drugs destroy the bone marrow cells. If you are worried about your fertility problem, then you can talk to your physician about sperm banking options which can help you have kids even if you lose fertility before or after treatment.

Factors affecting treatment options

Testicular cancer is most of the times curable and the treatment that is chosen depends on many factors that decide the chances of recovery. These factors include the type of cancer and the size of the tumor. This also includes the details like the number and size of the lymph nodes. The stage to which cancer has progressed and the levels of the tumor markers also play a pivotal role in deciding the treatment option. Some modes of testicular cancer treatment methods can lead to infertility permanently. Under such circumstances, the individuals can consider the option of sperm banking where the sperm can be collected and stored in a frozen mode.

Information on Cancer Herbs

Information About Brain Cancer

By Brijesh Ghelani

The words brain cancer seem to tend to bring with them terror over and above that of other forms of cancer, however, as terrible as this form of cancer is, and I don't mean to minimize it, brain cancer does not necessarily mean death. Sometimes cancerous tumors of the brain will not spread out to other areas of the body but will simply stay in the cranial cavity itself. It will however, often attack other tissues in that area and result in serious problems and challenges.

Sometimes the tumor will grow and push parts of the brain causing various reactions such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, comas, times when the victim will seem to be out of touch and unresponsive to people and things around him. Also, there will often be a dialation of the eye on the side where the tumor is located. Eye doctors will often notice differences in the eye and the eye responses during an eye examination. In very young children, this pushing can result in an increase of the size of the skull itself.

It may also result in certain neurological symptoms, cognitive impairment of various kinds, changes in behavior, personality, emotional responses or initiations,

It may also result in physical challenges, such as the loss of the sense of smell, loss or partial loss of sight, loss or partial loss of hearing, problems with swallowing, paralysis on one side of the body, stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizures and other problems, depending on what part of the brain the tumor is pressing against.

It is also to be noted that in some cases there will be no noticeable symptoms or that the symptoms will be so seemingly minor that the person's life will go on as usual with no or with very minor, hardly noticeable changes.

A person's health is important. If it is not taken care of properly, things like brain cancer may take over and change things and there will be no changing back. It is important to follow one's doctor's advice. Go for periodic checkups. If you find that something doesn't seem quite right, don't wait, make an appointment and go to the doctor. Your doctor has the equipment to look into things and find out. If he/she finds nothing wrong, celebrate, don't gripe about wasted money. If he/she does find something wrong, be glad you went and got help immediately, it can make all the difference; the difference between being a victim of brain cancer or a victor over brain cancer.
